THE TRANSFORMATION
Neural pathways for reading being wired around joy and connection, not stress
Real forward momentum in the specific skills they're working on, at their own pace
The thrill of cracking the code, noticing letters and words everywhere, out in the world
The experience of learning alongside someone who's fully present with them, building memories of learning to read together
A felt sense of safety to try, stumble, and keep going, mistakes and all
Genuine confidence, earned through real engagement, not performance
A real, working understanding of phonics and how reading develops, in language that makes sense
Nervous system attunement, learning to read your child's cues and your own, so you can stay present with both
Practical teaching strategies suited to how your child actually learns, whether through movement, visuals, or their own interests
Tools, games, and activities you'll keep using long after the mentorship ends
Real, hands on experience, observing, taking note, and practicing what you see at home
Confidence that you can keep nurturing your child's reading, wherever they are

Every element of this program has been thoughtfully designed to work together, building your child's literacy foundations while simultaneously building your confidence and capability as their most important learning partner.

50 minutes each, personalized to exactly where your child is and designed around their interests and how their body likes to move and learn, whether they don't know letters yet or are working through more advanced phonics patterns.

One on one, 20-30 minute calls where we talk through whatever phonics skills your child is working on, discuss teaching strategies, decide on next steps, and make adjustments together, all while I listen and cheer you on

A bit more teacher directed with bite sized, mini lessons, alongside story time, phonemic awareness, games, movement, and collaborative literacy play with the other families in the cohort

full access to my brain, with the ability to ask questions and get support whenever you need it, through the length of the program

A new game or activity to borrow and explore together each week, plus decodable readers as your child is ready.

Beautiful, open ended materials you and your child keep and uses again and again, with new ideas sent to you each week for how to bring them to life.

Short, focused videos covering phonics, the nervous system, and teaching strategies, so you're learning right alongside your child

A real reference you'll actually use, explaining the concepts and terms so you can speak the language and know what comes next.

Hi, I'm Lindsay,
I spent six years as a kindergarten teacher, and I loved the children and families deeply. But over time I couldn't ignore what I was watching happen. Five and six year olds experiencing stress, getting labeled as "behind," pushed toward benchmarks their bodies and brains simply weren't ready for.
So I left, and started building something different.
Raising my own nervous system sensitive, autonomy driven child taught me that you cannot push a child toward learning without a cost. I wanted reading to feel like an invitation, not something forced.
Since then, I've worked with children and parents who want to be actively involved in their child's reading journey, helping them understand how literacy develops and how to teach it in a way that feels natural, playful, and connected. That hands on involvement is at the heart of everything I do.
Family Phonics is built on the belief that children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and unhurried. I bring six years of classroom experience, deep knowledge of early literacy development, warmth, and a genuine respect for every child as a whole person.
I can't wait to be part of both of your journeys, yours and your child's.
THIS FALL'S COHORT
This Fall I'm opening my doors for an intimate, boutique literacy mentorship experience unlike anything else available in Austin. Every family goes through a brief application and consultation to make sure this is the right fit, for your child, for you, and for the cohort as a whole.
So every session, every call, and every interaction feels deeply personal and unhurried.
A brief application and warm consultation
call helps us get to know each other. If it feels like a good fit, we'll schedule a trial session with your child. Cohort members will be chosen from there.
Sessions take place in my carefully prepared home learning studio, a calm, sensory rich space designed to make children and parents feel at ease.
This is a high-touch, deeply personalized mentorship experience. Investment details are shared during your Consultation Call, where we can talk through the program, answer all your questions, and make sure it feels right for your family.

COMMON QUESTIONS
COMMON QUESTIONS
Absolutely. This program is designed for children right at the beginning of their literacy journey, whether that means learning their first letters and sounds, building the phonemic awareness foundation that makes reading possible, or just beginning to put letter sounds together to form words. We meet every child exactly where they are.
Not at all. Sessions are unhurried, low-pressure, and completely child-led in pace. There is no expectation for a child to perform or produce. If your child needs time to warm up, we give them that time, always. This is one of the things that makes this experience so different from traditional tutoring.
Yes, and that's intentional. Your presence is a core part of the experience. You're not dropping your child off. You're participating, observing, and learning alongside them. That's what makes this a family literacy mentorship rather than ordinary tutoring.
Life happens. Sessions are scheduled flexibly across the 8 weeks. If one week you need to skip and the next week you need to do two, you can, so there is built-in room for your family's rhythm. We'll work together to make sure you get the most out of your time.
Traditional tutoring is typically drop-off, drill-based, performance-driven, and focused on fixing a problem. This is something entirely different. You are present and participating. Sessions are playful, sensory-rich, and personalized. The focus is on building joyful foundations, not catching up or performing. And the weekly parent support calls mean you are supported and guided the entire way through.
Once your application is reviewed, families who seem like a good fit will be invited to a complimentary in-person Trial Session. This is a relaxed, playful meeting where you, your child, and I do an activity or two together, we get a feel for each other, and we all make sure this experience feels right before any commitment is made. Expect it to last around half an hour.
This program is designed for families who value connection, want to be actively involved in their child's learning, and are looking for a joyful, pressure-free alternative to traditional academic instruction. If that sounds like you, it probably is a good fit. The application and Trial Session are designed to help us both feel that out so we can be confident about that.
When you arrive you'll find the space already prepared, activities thoughtfully laid out and waiting, each one designed around your child's current level and interests. I might suggest a starting point, or give a tour of the activities, but I stay closely attuned to what your child is naturally drawn toward and follow their lead from there. Sessions offer a variety of experiences, gross motor activities like jumping to sounds and obstacle courses, fine motor work like tracing or building with letters, sensory trays, card games, board games, craft activities, books, and more. There is no expectation for how many activities we get through. I watch for natural transitions, tune in to when an activity is wrapping up, and gently guide attention toward the next thing when the time feels right. You'll be right there alongside us, participating, observing, and absorbing as we go.
We never push through resistance. If your child isn't feeling an activity we pivot, immediately and without pressure. The space is set up with many invitations precisely so there is always something else to move toward. There is no single activity that matters more than your child's comfort and willingness. This is one of the most important things I model during sessions, how to read your child's cues and respond with flexibility rather than force. Over time children in this environment almost always become more engaged, not less, because they learn that nothing will ever be forced on them here.
The take-home literacy activities and weekly ideas for your kit materials are invitations. They are never required or graded. If your family picks them up naturally and enjoys them, wonderful. If a week goes by and life gets busy, that's completely fine too. The goal is to make literacy feel like a natural part of your family's life, not another thing on the to-do list. Even reading together at bedtime, singing songs in the car, or noticing letters on a cereal box counts as meaningful literacy time. I'll be posting some simple word games you can play in the car and in line at grocery store together in our WhatsApp group too.
Absolutely not, in fact this program is designed with exactly that child in mind. Sessions intentionally include both gross motor and fine motor activities, so there is always something physical to move toward. We might be jumping to sounds, building letters with the whole body, moving across the room to match a letter, climbing the rock wall to a letter/word, using the sensory swing, doing an activity while sitting on the wobble cushion, or using letter cards as target practice with our ball. Energy is welcome here. Bodies are welcome here. Sitting still is never required.
No. You won't be sent home with a lesson plan or a teaching script. The weekly parent support calls are designed to give you simple, playful, low-pressure ideas that fit naturally into your family's everyday life. The goal is to help you feel confident and inspired, not overwhelmed or obligated. You'll absorb more than you realize just by being present during sessions.
Sessions are scheduled flexibly across the 8 weeks of September and October through our WhatsApp group on a first come, first serve basis. Because the cohort is intentionally small, scheduling is personal and collaborative, we work together to find times that fit your family's rhythm. There will be weekday morning and afternoons available. Group sessions will be scheduled as a group with everyones input.
Life happens and I understand that completely. I ask for as much notice as possible so we can find another time that works. I do ask that families come with a genuine commitment to showing up consistently.
The four biweekly group gatherings bring all the families in the cohort together for a joyful shared literacy experience. These are slightly more structured than our private sessions. They include mini lessons, and might include collaborative phonemic awareness games, story time, movement and music, and playful literacy activities designed for the whole group. They are relaxed, connection-centered, and a wonderful chance for children to experience literacy in community with peers. Parents stay and participate alongside their children.
Group gatherings are designed to be low-pressure and completely optional in terms of participation level. If your child prefers to observe before joining in, that is always welcome. There is no expectation for performance or engagement on any particular timeline. I stay attuned to every child in the group and make sure the environment feels safe and inviting for all temperaments.
Children have big feelings and sometimes those feelings show up during sessions, especially as they get comfortable enough to express themselves. I respond to hard moments with calm, patience, and zero judgment. We never push through distress. If a child needs a break, a snack, a moment with their parent, or simply to be done for the day, we honor that completely. These moments are also opportunities for me to model nervous-system-aware, connection-first responses that you can take home with you.
That happens sometimes and it is always okay. On days like that we might spend more time just being together in the space, reading a book, or doing something completely child-directed with no literacy agenda at all. Or maybe you and I engage in a game together if your child feels interested watching. Relationship and emotional safety always come before curriculum. A child who feels truly safe and not judged will often come back more open next time, and that trust is worth far more than any single session's content. There is no being "ahead" or "behind" in this space.
Investment details are shared during your Consultation Call. Pricing reflects a high touch mentorship for two, for both your child and you. Behind every session is a couple hours of planning and preparation, tailored specifically to your child, along with the literacy materials used throughout. Two partial scholarships are offered each cohort, so if that's something you could use, I'm happy to talk through applying for it together.
Because of the intimate nature of this program and our limited spots, all enrollments are final. The Trial Session is designed to make sure you feel completely confident before committing.
The families who get the most out of this experience are the ones who come curious and open, not just for their child's sake but for their own. Show up to sessions ready to participate, observe, and absorb. Come to your weekly parent calls with questions, observations, and even worries, those conversations are where so much of the magic happens. Try the take-home invitations when they feel natural. Have willingness to notice themselves in the process. And most importantly, trust the process. Don't push. Progress in early literacy is not always linear or immediately visible. The seeds we plant together this summer will continue to grow long after it ends.
There's no need to prepare or pre-teach anything. Come exactly as you are. If your child already knows some letters and sounds, wonderful, we'll build from there. If they don't, that's completely fine too. In fact I'd encourage you to resist the urge to drill or push before we begin, arriving relaxed and curious is the best possible preparation for this experience.
This program probably isn't the right fit if any of these feel true for you:
-You're looking for a structured academic curriculum with drills and worksheets
-You need your child reading by a specific deadline
-You're not open to a play based, child led approach
-You want quick fixes rather than a connected, gradual process
-You're looking for intensive intervention or specialized support for a diagnosed learning difference, since this program isn't designed to replace that kind of targeted work
-You're looking for a program where your child learns independently, without your involvement, since this is built around the two of you learning and growing together
